For 12-year-old Sean Wahl, the UCSB and Cottage Health's Wheelchair Sports Camp is more than just a summer activity – it's a transformative experience. "It's really fun. It's challenging. And I love it," he exclaims, reflecting the sentiment shared by many of the 39 campers who come together to swim, climb, serve, score, and play a variety of adaptive sports.Jennifer Wahl, Sean's mother, recognizes the profound impact these programs have on her son. "He loves adaptive sports, and this is a great opportunity for him to get out, get exercise, and make friends. And he's not the only one in a chair," she says, highlighting the inclusive nature of the camp.

Empowering Coaches and Facilitating Adaptive Sports

Fifth-year camp coach Kyle McKittrick is equally enthusiastic about the transformative power of adaptive sports. "It's just empowering," he exclaims, acknowledging the challenges and expenses associated with facilitating these programs. "And what's amazing to see here is all these kids trying out all these different sports that they can't do all the time," he adds, underscoring the range of opportunities these camps provide.McKittrick's passion for nurturing future Paralympians is palpable. "There's a ton of future Paralympians in here and I love seeing that," he says, highlighting the potential of the campers to excel in adaptive sports and inspire others.

Expanding Inclusion and Accessibility

Camp director Rene Van Hoorn emphasizes the importance of inclusion and accessibility in the world of adaptive sports. "Disabled kids often are pushed to the sidelines because people don't know how to modify for them," she explains. "So if we can just expand inclusion, That's all we're asking. He's like can somebody get to your facility? And then can you work with them to figure out how to get them involved," she adds, underscoring the need for a collaborative approach to making adaptive sports accessible to all.Van Hoorn's vision for the camp is to create an environment where individuals with disabilities can thrive and explore a wide range of sports, breaking down the barriers that have often kept them on the sidelines.
