Cultivating Community: The Vermilion Garden of Grace Tackles Food Insecurity

In the heart of Vermilion, Ohio, a community garden is blossoming with more than just fresh produce. The Vermilion Community Garden of Grace, located at St. Mary Catholic Parish, is a testament to the power of grassroots efforts in addressing food insecurity in the region. Through the dedication of volunteers and the support of local organizations, this garden has become a beacon of hope, nourishing both bodies and souls.

Sowing the Seeds of Change

A Ministerial Association's Vision Takes Root

The Vermilion Community Garden of Grace was born from the vision of a local ministerial association, a group of community leaders who recognized the pressing need to support those facing food insecurity. Volunteer Lynn Allegretto recounts the journey, "It was the idea of a Vermilion ministerial association that banded together to help those in need, eventually creating not only the Garden of Grace in 2012, but also Grace Community Kitchen at Trinity Lutheran Church."

Cultivating a Diverse Harvest

The garden itself is a tapestry of vibrant colors and flavors, with a variety of vegetables thriving in its raised beds. "Across various planting beds, vegetables at the garden include cabbage, varieties of tomatoes, assorted bell peppers, zucchini, yellow banana peppers, chives and oregano," Allegretto explains. The team behind the garden takes great care to ensure that the produce is organic and untouched, with the exception of the cabbage, which is treated with a bug deterrent to address past insect issues.

Expanding the Reach

What started as a small garden with just four raised beds has blossomed into a true community effort. "Though the garden originated at the church with only four raised beds, it has been a community garden for anyone to volunteer," Allegretto says. The garden's reach has extended beyond the church's walls, with the addition of a 10-foot-by-30-foot bed dedicated to a variety of tomatoes, thanks to the expertise and dedication of volunteer Frank Leon, a certified arborist at Barnes Nursery.

Branching Out to Serve the Wider Community

The Vermilion Community Garden of Grace's impact extends far beyond its physical boundaries. Last year, the garden donated extra food to the Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio, fulfilling Leon's goal of "branching out to not only Vermilion, but the surrounding counties." This collaborative effort has allowed the garden to serve an even wider network of individuals and families in need.

A Supportive Community Comes Together

The Vermilion Community Garden of Grace has fostered a strong sense of community, with volunteers and local organizations rallying behind its mission. The Knights of Columbus Council No. 4539 provided a donation that covered the cost of new raised beds, while an anonymous donor contributed plants and supplies. These acts of generosity have been instrumental in the garden's growth and ability to serve the community.

Nourishing Body and Soul

The impact of the Vermilion Community Garden of Grace extends far beyond the physical nourishment it provides. As Allegretto eloquently states, "Yes we're feeding them, but we're feeding their souls and we're giving them a new life." The garden has become a gathering place, a source of community and connection for those in need. "There is a community now that has been made because of Grace's Kitchen, and that's what it's all about," Allegretto adds.
