Darktide’s next update promises a complete overhaul of weapon progression: ‘We took the philosophy with this game to not be afraid of doing quite massive changes’

Darktide's Itemization Overhaul: Forging a Brighter Future for Warhammer's Grim Darkness

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide's launch may have been rocky, but developer Fatshark's unwavering commitment to improving the game has been nothing short of impressive. From new missions and enemies to a complete overhaul of class progression, the team has been relentless in their pursuit of refining the core experience. Now, they're setting their sights on a complete rethink of the game's itemization system, aiming to make investing in your weapons more satisfying and rewarding.

Unlocking the Potential of Warhammer's Grim Arsenal

Mastering the Armory: Unlocking Blessings and Perks

The current itemization system in Darktide has been a source of frustration for many players, with a heavy emphasis on obtaining the right drops and a limited ability to modify acquired weapons. The introduction of "locks" on blessings and perks has been a particular pain point, as players often found themselves stuck with suboptimal qualities on their prized armaments.Fatshark's solution to this issue is a complete overhaul of the itemization system, introducing new mechanics called Mastery and Expertise. As players use a weapon, they'll gain Mastery XP for all weapons of that type, unlocking blessings, perks, and cosmetics. The Expertise menu, on the other hand, will allow players to freely improve an individual weapon's stats and apply their unlocked blessings and perks, with no more frustrating locks in sight. This new approach promises to provide a more satisfying and rewarding progression system, where players feel a tangible sense of progress as they invest in their favorite weapons. By eliminating the randomness and limitations of the current system, Fatshark aims to empower players to truly customize and optimize their arsenal to suit their playstyle.

Laying the Foundation for Expansion

The team at Fatshark is not content with simply addressing the current issues; they're also laying the groundwork for future expansion and growth. The new itemization system is designed to be a flexible foundation that can be built upon, allowing the developers to introduce new layers of depth and complexity as the game evolves."We want to make sure that if we redo this system, we do it in a way where we can expand on it," says Anders De Geer, Darktide's chief creative officer. "These reworks need to bring compounded value to the game, right? Like when we did the class overhaul, or when we introduced penances, it allowed us to do a bunch of other things. These are systems that other systems can interact with now, and it adds this incremental value to all the other systems. We want the same when it comes to itemisation."By designing the new itemization system with future expansion in mind, Fatshark is ensuring that the changes they implement now will continue to pay dividends as the game grows and evolves. This forward-thinking approach demonstrates the team's commitment to creating a robust and sustainable foundation for Darktide's long-term success.

Honoring Player Investment: Preserving Progress

One of the key concerns for long-time Darktide players is the potential impact of these sweeping changes on their existing progress and investments. Fatshark has addressed this by ensuring that the hard work players have already put in will be reflected in the new system."You'll start off already having an amount of Mastery XP proportional to how many blessings you previously had available, ensuring you're not thrown back to square one," explains Victor Magnuson, Darktide's head of game design. This thoughtful approach demonstrates Fatshark's understanding of the importance of player investment and their desire to honor the time and effort that dedicated fans have already poured into the game. By preserving progress and building upon existing foundations, the team is creating a smooth transition that will be welcomed by the community.

Cautious Optimism: Addressing Fatshark's Itemization Track Record

While the proposed changes to Darktide's itemization system sound promising, it's understandable that some players may approach the news with a degree of cautious optimism. Fatshark's track record with item progression design has been a point of contention, with the loot system in Vermintide 2 often cited as a weakness."Even as a longtime fan of the studio's games, I'd be quick to admit that item progression design has always been its most obvious weakness," acknowledges the author. "Anyone who's opened as many disappointing Vermintide 2 loot crates as me will find it difficult to have complete confidence in Fatshark here."The fact that randomness will still play a role, with weapons having pre-rolled maximum stats, is a concern that some players may share. However, the team's commitment to reducing the impact of randomness and providing players with more control over their weapon progression is a step in the right direction.Ultimately, the success of the new itemization system will be determined by how it performs in practice. Fatshark's willingness to tackle this challenge head-on and their dedication to continuous improvement are encouraging signs, but the true test will come when the changes are implemented and players can experience the new system firsthand.
